How to Install Bathroom Accessories

Install Bathroom Accessories

Installing bathroom accessories (towel bars, toilet tissue holders, vanity or medicine cabinets, cup / toothbrush holders, grab bars, etc.) with TOGGLER® High Performance Anchors holds the accessory securely on all walls. Held securely, the accessory does not pull away from the wall or come loose when you tug on it or lean on it, or place something on it or in it.

Step-By-Step Instructions

Tools: Hammer, screwdriver / screw gun, measuring tape / ruler, level, pencil, screw, plus a drill for the ALLIGATOR Solid Wall Anchor.

Use our Application Finder to choose the right TOGGLER anchor, based on your wall material and the type of bathroom accessory that you are installing.
For most bathroom accessories installed on drywall the ideal anchor for lightweight to mediumweight accessories will be our SnapSkru Self-Drilling Drywall Anchor.
For installations on tile over drywall or over greenboard, the ideal anchor for lightweight to mediumweight accessories will be our ALLIGATOR Solid Wall Anchor. The ALLIGATOR anchor is also ideal for installations on concrete walls, brick walls, and stone walls.

If our Application Finder suggests using one of our other TOGGLER High Performance Anchors, click on "Learn more" under that anchor on the right-hand side of the page to see how to use that anchor to install your shelving quickly and easily.
For example, our SNAPTOGGLE Toggle Bolt is ideal for installing heavyweight accessories on all hollow walls (drywall, tile over drywall, plaster over lath, concrete block, etc.).

To install a bathroom accessory in 3/8" to 5/8" thick drywall using the SnapSkru Self-Drilling Drywall Anchor:

  1. Follow the instructions included with your bathroom accessory for marking the location of each anchor in the wall.
  2. At each mark, press tip of SnapSkru anchor into drywall using #2 Phillips screwdriver or screw gun with #2 Phillips bit. Drive anchor clockwise until anchor stops flush with wall.
  3. Place accessory over anchor and insert screw. Use #6, #8, or #10 sheet metal screw at least 1½" in length.
    If accessory is greater than 3/4" thick, use a longer screw.
    If using a wood screw, make sure that the non-threaded portion of the screw remains in the accessory being fastened and does not enter the SnapSkru wall anchor.
  4. Tighten screw flush with accessory.
  5. Repeat at each location.

To install a bathroom accessory using the ALLIGATOR All-Purpose Anchor:

  1. Follow the instructions included with your bathroom accessory for marking the location of each anchor in the wall.
  2. At each location, drill hole same diameter as anchor. Blow dust out of hole.
    Minimum hole depth:
    • 1½" for A5 / AF5 3/16" dia. anchor;
    • 1¾" for A6 / AF6 1/4" dia. anchor;
    • 2" for A8 / AF8 5/16" dia. anchor; and
    • 2½" for A10 3/8" dia. anchor.
  3. Insert ALLIGATOR anchor into hole and tap flush to wall with hammer. Repeat for all holes.
  4. Place bathroom accessory over anchor. Insert appropriately sized sheet metal screw or lag screw and tighten using screw gun with lag screw bit until screw head is flush with surface of bathroom accessory, then stop. Screw size range for each anchor shown on package and in technical bulletin. Repeat for each hole in bathroom accessory.

INSTALLATION TIP:
To avoid having to clean up the drywall powder from the floor after drilling the hole, place an index card underneath your drill bit to catch the dust as you are drilling.
